What Makes Woodhaven Different?

Our Staff: Low Employee Turnover Builds Strong Relationships

One of the most exceptional advantages Woodhaven offers is the longevity of our staff. In every department, and at all levels of experience and education, Woodhaven staff have been with us for longer than you'll find at just about any other senior care facility.

Mary Kathryn is happy to work at Woodhaven!

The Management Team is led by an Executive Director who has been in that position at Woodhaven for over 25 years. Longevity at the top rarely happens anywhere within the industry and contributes greatly to the strength and stability that is needed in these times of uncertainty.

The Director of Admissions and Marketing is typically the first and the most important initial contact and then provides ongoing support and continuity throughout a loved one’s stay. Woodhaven's Director of Admissions and Marketing has been serving seniors for over 20 years.

In fact, the Management Team at Woodhaven has a grand total of over 75 years managing the care and life at Woodhaven! This number does not include the wealth of experience accumulated by these persons prior to coming to work at Woodhaven.

All this is the more amazing, since Woodhaven has only been open for business for a quarter of a century.

Woodhaven has learned the secret that if staff are treated well enough to do everything in their power to please their employer, that they will will automatically treat the residents the same way. It can’t be otherwise.

Unfortunately, it is not at all uncommon for many retirement communities to have regular ongoing staff supplied by contract or temporary staffing agencies, due to the 24/7 nature of the business and the last minute illnesses and other emergencies that staff encounter. In its entire history, Woodhaven is proud to say that it has not used one hour of contract or temporary staffing. All staff, without exception, has been Woodhaven evaluated, selected, trained and carefully supervised.

Staffing longevity nearly often results in better understanding of each unique resident’s needs and desires. Similarly, staff becomes intimately familiar with the family members and their hopes and goals for their loved one at Woodhaven, as well.

As if that were not enough, Woodhaven recently adopted mandatory consistent staffing, such that the same staff is always assigned to the same residents to further create helpful relationships and enhanced understanding.

Our Size: Intimate Spaces Allow Close Personal Attention

Woodhaven provides a most intimate setting for congregate living, due to the Board’s commitment to keeping the Home small.  Woodhaven has five levels of care and each is separate and distinct:

  • Independent Living
  • Assisted Living
  • Memory Services
  • Skilled Nursing/Rehabilitation
  • Adult Day Respite

In the large one story Georgian colonial building, three boutique neighborhoods of approximately 30 residents each provide retirement living with the best of the “small house” features and benefits. These neighborhoods each focus on a separate and unique individualized program of service:

  • Assisted living - for those who enjoy choosing meals from a menu, hosting friends in an apartment and having everything done for them from making their bed, to cleaning their apartment, to doing their laundry to cooking for them
  • Memory services - for those who are most safe in a secured perimeter with 24 hour supervision, redirection and tender understanding
  • Skilled nursing/rehabilitation – for those with presenting medical conditions and/or acute weakness that can often benefit from intensive therapy, 24 hour nursing attention. The goal here is to provide the professional resources and skilled attention necessary to allow the patient to return to their home, senior apartment or assisted living.

Gracious and spacious one and two bedroom apartments with one or two baths are in a separate building with wonderful shared spaces including a business center, library, formal dining room complete with china and silver, fitness center, whirlpool room, two story atrium and complimentary hotel suite for your out of town guests!

Adult day respite is currently funded by Older Americans Act money as allocated to Woodhaven by the local Area Agency on Aging. Most adult day residents who come from western Wayne County are able to come without paying, although a free will donation is requested. The day respite program is open from 5:00 a.m. until 11:00 p.m. every day of the year, including weekends and holidays! Day participants can come for as many or as few hours per day or even days per week as works best for them. If they are here at 8:00 a.m., 11:30 a.m. and/or 4:30 p.m. they are served hot meals at no extra charge to them. If they need extra assistance due to the impact of the later stages of Alzheimer’s disease, it is also provided.

Woodhaven is the only retirement community in the Livonia area that provides five separate and distinct levels of care.

Our Uniquely Christian Environment

The Woodhaven Retirement Community was developed and is operated to provide a Christian haven for residents of all faiths. Loud prayers are offered at mealtime, devotionals and/or Bible readings are scheduled daily, and weekly church services and/or hymn sings are offered to all, regardless of denomination.

Staff is encouraged to pray for God’s wisdom and guidance as they discharge their daily duties and responsibilities. The Board of Directors is committed to regular intercessory prayer for Woodhaven that God’s protection, His peace and His blessing might rest upon the entire operation.

Major decisions are not made without first consulting God for His perfect will and plan for Woodhaven’s future.

In fact, as you leave Woodhaven, a focal sign thanks each one for praying for Woodhaven and serves as a gentle reminder to those who may have forgotten to do so.

Although it is helpful to be not for profit, licensed by the state and certified by the federal government, it is ultimately God’s approval that is most desired. “…all things work together for good to them who love God…”
